United States welcomes thousands of Cubans each year as refugees fleeing from political repression, no questions asked. However, many criticize the special treatment they receive while many of them spend much time coming and going to the island where they were supposedly persecuted, the journal Tyler Morning Telegraph publishes.
The newspaper notes that “a congressman wants to end this relaxation implementing regulations which would prevent refugees to freely travel to Cuba until they become US citizens”. If this measure is approved, "it would be the most significant change in Cuban Adjustment Act in almost 50 years”.
US Rep Carlos Curbelo, descendant of Cuban exiles, proposes to require Cubans seeking entry as political refugees to live up to this condition, and "those who return to the island would face consequences: the probable loss of their legal status in the US.”
Curbelo´s proposal foresees that Cubans, when arriving, have to make a formal statement assuring fleeing the country due to political persecution.
