After 15 years, the waters separating Cuba and the United States returned to fraternize in the event 'Havana Challenge', organized by the Yacht Club of Cuba, the Key West Yacht Club and the Key West Sailing Center.
About one hundred Americans arrived in Havana in about twenty ships this weekend from Key West (Florida) for the regatta 'Havana Challenge' to be held on Tuesday 19, Cubadebate website reported.
The Havana Challenge regatta, from Key West, Florida, returns to Cuban shores after President George W. Bush tightened existing prohibitions which restricted the departure of vessels from the territory of the United States toward Cuba, in a law enacted on February 26, 2004.
"It will be a historic event, the encounter between the boating communities of Cuba and Florida," said Cuban José Miguel Diaz Escrich, Commodore of the Yacht Club of Cuba, according to AP
Escrich predicted that this nautical event could be the first of many similar tournaments involving representatives of Cuba and the United States.
