Athletes from Cuba and the United States star today in the waters of Havana seawall promenade, a race with more symbolic than competitive value, since it is the first after the announcement of the intention of both governments to restore diplomatic relations.
Five Cuban teams and equal number of Americans compete in the called Hobbie Cats, very fast, light and unstable ships, according to José Miguel Diaz Escrich, commodore of the Hemingway International Yacht Club of Cuba.
He added that Craig Cates, mayor of Key West, and the sailors Joe Weatherby and George Bellenger, who participated in the first Havana Challenge in 2000, and who are the main promoters of this new edition, are among Americans who traveled to the island.
On Thursday is scheduled the arrival of another American regatta, this time from Sarasota, Florida, where it is expected the arriving of the grandchildren of the novelist Ernest Hemingway, who left strong traces in this country.
