The US diplomat Roberta Jacobson will continue to lead the negotiations for the restoration of diplomatic relations with Cuba, until being confirmed at her new position as ambassador to Mexico , said on Tuesday the State Department.
"Until her to be confirmed in that post, she remains being Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs and will continue in that role," stated Marie Harf, State Department spokeswoman.
The White House announced on Monday Obama’s "intention" to appoint Jacobson as the new US ambassador to Mexico, although the appointment still has to be put to a vote of the Senate for approval.
Since Cuba and the United States announced on December 17 the start of a diplomatic approach process, Jacobson has led all negotiations by the US side.
