Jeffrey DeLaurentis, chief of the Interests Section of US in Havana, delivered this morning to the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Marcelino Medina, a letter from President Barack Obama to Raul Castro on the resumption of diplomatic relations and the opening of embassies in the respective countries.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Cuba said that the letter confirms the decision to restore diplomatic relations between the two countries and open permanent diplomatic missions in their respective capitals, from July 20, 2015.
This entity reports that the head of the Interests Section of Cuba in Washington, José Ramón Cabañas, was received in the morning at the State Department by Acting Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, whom he delivered a letter from Raul Castro to President Obama confirming Cuba's decision to restore diplomatic relations with the United States and open embassies in both capitals.
The protocol efforts of DeLaurentis and Cabañas, as reported by officials of the White House, preceded the announcement that was made at 11:00 am by President Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry on the agreement with Havana to open the embassies this month.
