President Barack Obama, along with Vice President Joe Biden, appeared in the Rose Garden of the White House to announce that an agreement with Havana to restore diplomatic relations with Cuba on July 20 and to open the respective embassies in Washington and Havana has been reached.
"This is a historic step forward in our efforts to normalize relations with the Government and people of Cuba, a new chapter with our neighbors," Obama said in a brief statement.
"When the United States closed its embassy in 1961 I think anyone expected it would take more than half a century to reopen it, as there are only 90 miles between our countries and there are many friendship and family ties."
"The progress we are making today shows that we do not need being confined to the past. When something does not work we can change it and we will," said the President.
