US and Cuba will hold next week in Havana their first formal talks on the normalization of air service between the two countries, a move long awaited by the major US airlines.
The talks will take place on 28 and 29 September in Havana, according to a US official who requested anonymity.
Americans are forbidden to travel to Cuba as tourists due to the economic embargo imposed by Washington on Havana. Therefore, in the event that commercial flights were established, they will travel limited to 12 categories of Americans who can now apply to travel to Cuba, while Congress does not lift the veto to regulate tourism.
Many US airlines including American Airlines and JetBlue are wishing to establish regular lines between the two countries and put pressure on the authorities to lift the restrictions.
