Cuban President Raul Castro sent his condolences to Saudi Arabia's King Salman bin Abdulaziz following a stampede that took place during the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to the Mecca, in the locality of Mina, which resulted in 769 deaths, diplomatic sources announced.
A note by the Cuban embassy in Riad explained that the Cuban leader sent his message to the monarch for the tragedy, which also led to over 900 injured, according to official figures.
The stampede occurred when the pilgrims headed to the Jamarat brigde to the "stoning of the Devil" ritual. The Hajj General Committee calculated that some 2 million Islamic pilgrims from over 60 nations were participating at the largest annual religious procession in the world.
