More than 36,000 Cubans have come to the United States through the border with Mexico and the port and airport of Miami during the current fiscal year ending September 30, representing an increase of over 60% over the period above.
The US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) of October 1, 2014 to August 31 last 36,497 Cubans reached American soil; whereas throughout the past fiscal year (October 2013 to September 2014) they were 22,162.
Immigration experts like the Migration Policy Institute (MPI), say this increase is due to the fear of losing Cuban immigration benefits after the normalization of relations between the US and Cuba.
