Hebertprot P made in Cuba and only of its type in the world that cures diabetic foot ulcers has benefited some 700 patients this year in the province of Camaguey.
The territory has had good results in the use of the medication above all in the primary health sector with a drastic reduction in foot amputation, said Odalys Escalante, President of the Cuban Vascular Society in Camaguey.
Diabetes is the main cause of some 80 percent of leg amputations and is also one of the most frequent complications of people that suffer from diabetes.  Camaguey has a rate of 6.8 diabetic sufferer for every one thousand inhabitants.
Meanwhile, some three thousand 500 people from Camaguey have benefited of the services of the Provincial Center in the Attention of Diabetic Patients since its foundation in 2009 up to date as a complement of the integral services for the treatment of the illness in all of the health and hospital areas.
The health centers registers, on a nightly basis and each week an average of 15 unstable patients, whose metabolic function are regulated, are offered medical consultations and are educated on the self-control of their illness, said Ernesto Abad its director.
Camaguey is placed as the third in Cuba, followed by Havana and Matanzas with the highest rates of diabetes. (acn)
