To date, 60,000 patients "out of the more than 400,000 Latin Americans treated through the Miracle Mission program" have been operated on by Venezuelan doctors. The program is being promoted by Cuba and Venezuela to eradicate eye problems.
These figures were provided by Gustavo Sosa, the mission coordinator at the Carlos Arvelo military hospital, during the arrival of 84 Ecuadorians looking to be assisted, reported the Prensa Latina news agency.
Sosa pointed out that two or three groups of patients come to Venezuela from different Latin American countries every month to be operated on for cataracts, glaucoma, pterygium, and strabismus.
The program started with operations in Cuban care centres, and in ten years time it is expected to have restored the eyesight of 6 million Latin Americans.
