Since February and until next July 5th there will be held in Havana the cycle A prelude to hope. The struggle for power of the Cuban Revolution, 1859-1959, sponsored by the Emilio Roig de Leuchsenring department from the Instituto de Historia de Cuba (Cuban History Institute), under the direction of the historian and researcher Ricardo Quiza.
The six topics of the event which has Dr. José R. Herrera as coordinator on this occasion, will be presented and debated on the first Thursday of each month, and answer to serious researches on the different organizations that fought against the Batista regime, highlighting the most important historical, political, ideological and social milestones that took place before the triumph of the Revolution, on January 1st, 1959. This will be in charge of PhD in History, researchers and history graduates and this results in the high academic level and the quality that have distinguished until now the presentations given in the Palacio de Aldama, the venue of the Unión de Historiadores de Cuba (Cuban Association of Historians).
So, on the first Thursday in May, the themes were centred around The ways of insurgency. Different fights in front of the same enemy, separated into the conferences: Insurrection or Transformation? Jacobites and reformists faced with the dilemma of the political changes, The different Revolutionary movements. Tactics and strategies from the M-26-7; The 13 de Marzo Directory and the PSP (Stands for Popular Socialist Party), as well as The reformist organizations: Triple A and the Authentic Organization, presented by Dr. José R. Herrera Medina, Dr. José Cantón Navarro and Msc. Julio César Guanche.
The differences and the coincidences between the 26 de Julio Movement and the Partido Socialista Popular (Popular Socialist Party) were brilliantly developed by Dr. Cantón Navarro and how beyond any discrepancy in the method to use in order to overthrow the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista they maintained the close relation between both organizations, which since 1957, after all the differences had been eradicated, the strengthen their links and the people belonging to the PSP were allowed to incorporate themselves to the Rebel Army, commanded by Fidel Castro.
To this effect the speaker recalled that in May 1957 the Carta Semanal (Weekly Letter), the press issue from the PSP, published the clear support to the insurrection that was being taken place in the Sierra Maestra and from that moment onwards the Carta also became a speaker for that armed fight. In millitary terms, the militants from the PSP were subordinated to the Rebel Army and in political terms to the PSP, explained Cantón Navarro.
Until now, the themes which have been dealt with correspond to the following titles: Prelude to a myth: The Cuban Republic before July 26, 1953; The Island between dictatorships, from Machado to March 10th, during which were presented the following speaches: Gerardo Machado's dictatorship, the rise of the revolutionary movement and the failure of the 1930's revolution; The era of the authentic governments. Eduardo Chibás and Orthodoxy. Batista's coup d'état and the reaction of the traditional political parties, as well as the one called: The first political groups in proclaiming the option of insurrection against the new dictatorship (The Triple A and the MNR). The speakers were Dra. Angelina Rojas Blaquier and Jorge Renato Ibarra.
Also, on the first Thursday in march, April and June, respectively, there will be the following topics: The moral reserves of a Republic. The appearance of a new political avant-garde, through the conferences: Fidel, Abel and the Young Generation of the Centenary (features of the Generation of the Centenary and differences in their projection with the traditional political parties of the time and the others rebel groups. The assault to the Moncada Barracks, its historical legacy), given by Dr. Mario Mencía and Mayra Aladro.
While The conspiracy of the fool. The army of the tyrany in front of the liberation movement, was tackled with the following presentations: Batista: the power of the weapons (changes in the structure of the army after the coup on March 10, 1952); Evolution and reaction of the armed forces in the face of the increasing development of the revolutionary movement headed by Fidel in the Sierra Maestra which were presented by Dr. and Lte. Col. Roberto Pérez Rivero and Dr. Servando Valdés Sánchez. The already mentioned themes will be followed by: From the sea to the mountain. Appearance and development of the Rebel Army, with the presentations: Revolution in the war and war for the revolution. New concepts in a new army which includes the following researches: the new tasks of the guerrilla warfare: to mobilize the people, to defeat the regular army and to install revolutionary power, and the appearance of new frames. It also includes everything related to the alliance with the country people, as well as the structure of the army and the foundation of the guerilla fronts. The speakers will be the PhDs. in history: Angel Jiménez and José R. Herrera Medina, as well as Andrés Castillo Bernal.
The closing of the current event which is being held by the Emilio Roig de Leuchsenring department is expected to take place on the Thursday, July 5th with the theme Unite as a prelude of the revolutions. The forge in the political integration in the Cuban liberating movement, broken down in the conference: Revolution is of all of us: forge of unity through political compromises, including the following aspects: Popular mobilization around the Rebel Army; Rapprochement of the leaders of the Sierra Maestra to the other revolutionary movements: organization of the FONU, Caracas Pact, Pedrero Pact and the recognition of Fidels leadership. The speakers will be: Dr. Oliver Cepero Echemendía and Sergio Ravelo. For this occasion there is expected the presentation of the piece La palabra empeñada (The committed word), by Heberto Norman Acosta.
