Cuban-born boxers Kevin Brown and Idalberto Umara are set for a night of action in Florida to dispel the myth that Cubans shouldn't fight each other. The bout is scheduled for May 31 at the Caribe Royale Hotel in Orlando, as part of a Boxlab Promotions event.
Both fighters will compete for the Intercontinental prize of the World Boxing Association (WBA), in a highly anticipated match showcasing their ring skills. Luis de Cubas, an executive at Warriors Boxing and a supporter of Brown, stated, "This should be an incredible fight that will have everyone on their feet."
He confidently added, "Seeing two Cubans fight is becoming the norm rather than the exception. There are many talented Cuban boxers. This was inevitable."
On Umara's side, Osmiris Fernández, head coach at M&R Boxing Promotions who manages Umara's career, mentioned, "When we proposed this fight and asked Idalberto, he didn't hesitate for a minute." He added that they respect Brown and his professional accomplishments but "fully trust in our guy."
Kevin Brown Bazain secured his first professional title last year, the WBA Continental Americas, in a 10-round fight at the Caribe Royale Orlando in Florida. The junior welterweight debutant triumphed over American Julian Smit. It had only been a year since he left the national team of the Island during a layover in Panama on their way to the Continental Boxing Championship in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
