Mother in Cuba Outraged to See Her Children Sleeping on the House's Porch Due to Power Outage

Wednesday, May 15, 2024 by Robert Castillo

A Cuban mother residing in Santiago de Cuba expressed her outrage as her two children attempted to sleep on the porch during a midnight power outage, one of the most challenging aspects of the unbearable energy crisis that plagues the country.

"We are here on the porch because the children can't sleep due to the heat. It's three in the morning. They got up from their room to sleep here. They didn't go to school yesterday, and they can't go today either because, imagine, I'm not going to wake them up at seven in the morning," the Cuban woman lamented in a video shared on social media by journalist Yosmany Mayeta.

"I have no words, folks. It's not about the adults because I can lie down and everything is fine; it's about the children who can't sleep. They have to sleep on the floor, and at seven in the morning, they can't get up because look at how they are," the woman emphasized, echoing a complaint that many parents across the country have been making in recent days.

For the eighth time in nine days, the Unión Eléctrica de Cuba (UNE) reported power outages throughout the entire day on Wednesday.

The situation is not expected to improve significantly on May 15, with an estimated 980 MW power shortage during peak hours.
