Animals Shelter in Miami Requests Fans and Air Conditioners to Combat Heatwave

Saturday, May 18, 2024 by Oscar Fernandez

The intense heatwave currently affecting the state of Florida is taking a toll on the animals at a shelter, prompting the facility to request donations of equipment to help mitigate the impact of the soaring temperatures.

The Medley animal shelter in Miami has appealed to the community for donations of "fans, portable air conditioners, cooling mats, food, towels, or any other supplies," according to a post on Only in Dade's Instagram profile this Thursday.

Donations can be dropped off at the address 3599 NW 79th Ave, Doral, FL 33122, at the animal shelter that, according to the profile, "lacks air conditioning," significantly affecting the animals suffering from the heat.

There are only two fans available for the 150 dogs at the location, which are insufficient to combat the heat that reaches up to 95 degrees Fahrenheit (35 degrees Celsius), the post indicated.

"The workers are asking for any help from the community and are open to ideas or suggestions," the Instagram profile emphasized.

Lastly, they requested that if anyone works at a factory that produces industrial fans, they consider donating a few units or offering a discount.

In Cuba, also affected by the intense heatwave but with a different economic reality, animal protectors asked people this Thursday to place water containers in porches, yards, and gardens.

The organization Cubanos en Defensa de los Animales (CEDA) highlighted on Facebook the importance of keeping animals hydrated amidst the high temperatures, noting that they need to drink water now more than ever.

"Let's do it for those who have no one else," they stated on the social network, underscoring the abandonment faced by animals in Cuba, often saved from death thanks only to protectors and not governmental initiatives.
