Two Cars Collide in Major Crash on 5th Avenue, Havana

Tuesday, May 21, 2024 by Charlotte Gomez

A serious traffic accident occurred during the night on Monday on 5th Avenue in the Miramar neighborhood of Havana's Playa municipality, according to a shocking video shared on social media.

Despite the severe damage to the involved vehicles, it appears there were only injuries reported, though this has not been confirmed. The video shows an injured person sitting on the ground and another trapped inside the vehicle, a rental car that, according to a witness, collided with a BMW that stopped several meters from where the rental car ended up.

Eyewitness Account of the Accident

"The BMW was speeding down 5th Avenue, and the rental car suddenly pulled out, hitting the side and flipping multiple times. The engine of the rental car detached and landed inside a house, while the BMW stopped a block away. The owner had just brought it into the country two hours prior," a witness stated.

"The injuries were sustained by the occupants of the rental car, with the driver suffering multiple fractures and possibly losing toes, and the passenger also getting hurt. The occupants of the BMW were not seriously injured," added the same source.

Several internet users identified the accident's location as 5th Avenue and 98th Street.

"Someone needs to explain this. That's my area. There's a car at 98th and another close to 110th. How did this happen?" questioned a skeptical commenter upon viewing the images.

The video shows dozens of people gathered around the rental car, many of them merely recording the scene instead of helping the injured or attempting to stop a car to take them to the hospital. This has sparked significant outrage in the comments section of the video posted in the Accidents Buses & Trucks group.

"Cars keep passing by, and none stop," exclaimed a shocked woman as several vehicles drove past the scene without stopping, despite the critical situation.

Some internet users have questioned what the car in the video crashed into, given the numerous vehicle fragments scattered across the avenue.

Many have speculated that at least one of the involved parties was speeding, as this is the only way they can understand such extensive damage to both vehicles.

"That area of 5th Avenue has a minimum speed limit of 80 km/h on the left and 60 km/h on the right, and people usually drive over 80 because it's a fast road. The impact must have been very strong. Hopefully, there won't be any fatalities," commented one driver.

As of the closure of this article, no further details about the accident have been confirmed.
