Marta, Cuba’s Viral Grandma, Declines U.S. Visit

Tuesday, May 21, 2024 by Ava Castillo

Marta, the Cuban grandmother who has become a viral sensation in recent months due to her antics with Ariel Ramos Perdomo, whom she adopted as her "grandson," has confirmed in a video call with the young man that she has no plans to visit the United States.

"Aren't you coming here to the 'Yunai' to see me?" Ariel, who arrived in the U.S. this past weekend, asked her.

"Can you imagine me on a plane? How crazy! Martica 'the fierce' lands in the United States. Can you imagine that on all the front pages?" Marta humorously responded in a video posted by Ariel to his Instagram stories.

"No way, no, I don't want to go there. Don't get mad, but no," the elderly woman replied more seriously, likely already missing the adventures she used to have with her "adoptive" grandson.

Despite many believing they were real family, Ariel Ramos confirmed upon his arrival in the U.S. that Marta is not his biological grandmother, though he loves her as if she were. He emphasized that she will remain a fundamental part of his life even though he has emigrated.

Ramos Perdomo, who arrived in Missouri on Sunday thanks to the humanitarian parole program, explained in an interview with journalist Mario J. Pentón that he met Marta nearly four years ago when he and his partner rented a house from her.

He explained that Marta is exactly as she appears in the videos, and her numerous antics led him to seek permission from her family to document her spontaneity and natural charm, which has made her so famous and beloved.

He also noted that Marta's decision not to visit the United States should be respected since she is an elderly person. "She is in the best hands in Cuba, with her family. From my side, she will never be left helpless," assured the TikToker.

Having studied veterinary medicine but never practiced due to living conditions in Cuba, Ariel is determined to continue creating content from the U.S. He wants Marta to remain a part of it because he says, "there is no Ariel without Marta."

Throughout the interview, he emphasized that even though Marta's biological family takes excellent care of her in Cuba, he will also ensure she lacks nothing from his side.
