Cuban Businesswoman and Mother of Autistic Teen: "It's Very Hard, But It's Possible"

Wednesday, May 22, 2024 by Emma Garcia

Dianelis Gil is the mother of an 18-year-old teen with autism and also a Cuban businesswoman who has been running her business in Hialeah, Florida for six years. La Guajira Pizzería employs 11 people and operates 24 hours a day. For her, it's not just about providing for her family but also a source of immense satisfaction. Being a woman and an entrepreneur is not easy, but she assures that despite the nights filled with tears and sleeplessness, "it's very hard, but it's possible." She believes that the limit lies in the mind of the person who sets it.

Currently, she has no plans to open more locations or diversify her business. Instead, her focus is on maintaining employment for her 11 workers. 95% of them have been in the United States for only a year or two, and for her, it is crucial to provide them with job security, even when business slows down. This is why she isn't considering expanding her already thriving business, which initially only operated until 9 PM, then until 2 AM, and now runs 24 hours a day.

Originally from Real Campiña in Cienfuegos, Gil is proud of her roots and the education she received. She is also very committed to her community and her son's school, often running promotions for children and cooking for them at her business.

As a mother, she can't escape the guilt of leaving her children at home to go to work. She confesses that this guilt is a daily struggle. When asked what advice she would give to mothers of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Gil recommends that besides taking care of their child, they should not abandon their dreams. Whether it's hairstyling, cooking, or any other passion, they should continue pursuing it because their children need their mothers to be strong by their side.
