As a palliative for the pain caused by power outages in Cuba, authorities in the province of Camagüey are offering the public a dose of entertainment and false tranquility with a program of recreational activities and various food sale options.

According to the state broadcaster Radio Cadena Agramonte, the initiative stems from the joint efforts of the Municipal Assembly of People's Power in the territory, the Municipal Company of Restaurants and Recreation Centers, and the Business Group of Commerce. Thus, the region, which has reported the most outages at the beginning of the month, will have access to food dishes priced at 50 CUP. The menu includes a portion of rice, protein, tubers, and salads.

According to Dixami Rodríguez Gómez, president of the Municipal Assembly, "the program of actions has had a favorable impact in areas such as Guernica, Arenera, El Porvenir, and La Belén."

In addition to food, the institutions offer recreational and entertainment alternatives, with sports games for children and adolescents, as well as performances by the Golpe a Golpe Sociocultural Project, part of the Hermanos Saíz Association.

Options like these attempt to alleviate the discomfort caused by a prolonged crisis in the Cuban electrical system, which lacks the infrastructure to meet the energy demand of a country experiencing power outages lasting up to 18 continuous hours.

The consequences of this debacle extend nationwide. For example, the absence of electricity this Wednesday caused the loss of "fluid milk" intended for children in Matanzas, reported the state-run channel Telebandera on Facebook.

Similarly, in Santiago de Cuba, the sale of charcoal to the population was announced as an alternative to the electro-energy deficit and the fuel situation. This occurs in a country where the majority of the population relies on electronic devices for cooking food.
