Inspiring Debut: Cuban Shines on TV Show Despite Lack of Singing Experience and Family Criticism

Thursday, May 23, 2024 by Madison Pena

The story of Rachel Rodríguez, a Cuban native, has been truly inspiring on the show “Tengo Talento, Mucho Talento.” Despite it being her first time on a stage, with no prior experience in front of an audience or musical training, and facing family criticism, she managed to captivate the judges of the program in the United States.

The 21-year-old, a resident of Miami, Florida, impressed the talent show jury with her beautiful rendition of “La Ley del Monte,” composed by José Ángel Espinosa Aragón, as seen in a video shared on Facebook by the TV show.

"Everyone told you not to come, they said you scream, even your brother blocked you," commented one of the judges, who admitted to being completely captivated by Rodríguez's talent and story. The young Cuban, who currently studies ultrasound and works as a medical assistant, responded, "I've been told 'don't show up anywhere, you don't have talent, you won't get anywhere.'"

Gaining the sympathy of the judges, Rodríguez shared, "One should never give up because of what others say but continue until the end," revealing that her mother has been her sole supporter.

At the end of her performance, not only did she receive applause from the audience and approval from the judges, but one of them, singer Ana Bárbara, addressed Rodríguez's brother, saying, "You made a grave mistake, and I hope you can make it up to your sister because there is really great talent there, and often insecurity inhibits it."

Before leaving the stage, visibly emotional, Rodríguez directed a heartfelt message to her mother: "Thank you so much for always being there for me."

Recently, another Cuban contestant, Alexander Capote, also won the hearts of the “Tengo Talento, Mucho Talento” judges with his rendition of "Cuando yo quería ser grande," a song fondly remembered by the voice of Vicente Fernández. Capote's performance brought the judges to their feet, earning him a beautiful compliment from Mexican singer Ana Bárbara, who said, "You have the best voice of the season."
