The Cuban theater scene mourns the loss of one of its most prolific and dedicated advocates, the acclaimed playwright Nelson Dorr, who passed away early Sunday morning in Havana at the age of 84.

A recipient of the 2011 National Theater Award, the distinguished director left behind a vast body of work that captivated audiences and critics for decades, as highlighted by the National Council of Performing Arts on their Facebook page.

Additionally, the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) praised his versatility, noting his achievements in "various genres and formats," and recognizing his accolades including the Omar Valdés award. Dorr also presided over the Musical Theater Section and served as vice president of the Association of Performing Artists.

A painting graduate from the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts, Dorr stood out for his expertise in over a hundred productions spanning diverse genres and formats, including monologues, opera, and musical theater.

"Alongside his brother Nicolás, he was a pivotal figure in Cuban performing arts. His work with the National Dramatic Ensemble was crucial to his career," UNEAC emphasized.

His journey in the arts began as an actor in University Theater, where he played the role of the Auctioneer in "The Plague Comes from Melos," a piece by Argentine playwright Osvaldo Dragún. He continued his path by founding the ensemble Conjunto de Los Trece, though it had a brief existence.
