Cuban Woman in Suriname Chooses Jungle Life Over Cuba: "This Is a Land of Opportunities"

Monday, May 27, 2024 by Elizabeth Alvarado

A Cuban woman living in Suriname has stated that she prefers residing in the jungle of the South American country over her homeland. She made this assertion following comments she received on TikTok, where users left messages like "I wouldn't go to the jungle for garlic and onions" or "It's worse than being in Cuba." In response, this Cuban woman, who identifies as @kathyotero on TikTok, showcased her reality in Suriname, living in the jungle with supermarkets stocked with various foods.

"I am a Cuban here in Suriname in the jungle, surrounded by wilderness. There are tigers, monkeys, snakes, and more. I live near a river. But let me show you everything available here that unfortunately, we don't have in our country," she began, entering a store and displaying the food items available. "Everything you see here, we don't have in my beautiful Cuba, even in a jungle. From a bottle of oil to a variety of foods, cookies, everything you can imagine is here in this jungle. It's better to live in this jungle than back home in my beautiful Cuba," she asserted, sharing her personal experience.

"This is my perspective, and for anyone seeking a land of opportunities to start a business and move forward, this is the place. Many Cubans live here; I'm not in the city, I'm in the jungle, but everything is different here despite missing family and facing challenges. People come here to fight for a better life, and when you leave Cuba, it's with a purpose. Over there, there are no purposes," commented Kathy Otero, highlighting the situation in Cuba.
