Firefighters in Cuba rescued a young man on Monday after he fell from an abandoned bridge in Cienfuegos.

The pro-government page "Salvando Vidas" shared on Facebook that the incident took place in the "San Lázaro" Popular Council. On Monday night, rescuers arrived at the scene to assist a man identified as Ignacio, who had fallen from a deteriorated iron bridge over the local river. The bridge has been out of use for years and is in a severe state of disrepair.

Members of the Cuban Fire Department arrived and provided Ignacio with first aid. They then immobilized him for evacuation on a stretcher. According to the post, Ignacio had fallen in a narrow area, making his extraction challenging.

It was reported that the victim sustained a fractured hip and femur and was transported to Gustavo Aldereguía Lima Hospital. Further details about Ignacio's fall from the bridge remain unknown. This particular bridge has been out of service for several years. In 2022, the newspaper 5 de Septiembre wrote a piece calling it the "retired bridge" and noted that it once carried countless tons of sugar, honey, wheat, and rice.

Many bridges across Cuba are in critical condition, as the regime lacks the resources to repair them.
