Final Stretch of Mexico's Election: Candidate Xóchitl Gálvez Criticizes Cuban Doctor Contracts Again

Tuesday, May 28, 2024 by Matthew Diaz

With less than a week remaining until Mexico's presidential elections on June 2, opposition candidate Xóchitl Gálvez released a video on her social media platforms, once again criticizing the current government's hiring of Cuban doctors.

Gálvez, representing the opposition coalition Fuerza y Corazón por México, took to Facebook to declare that “the Cuban doctors' deal was to finance the regime,” sharply criticizing the administration of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) from the Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) party and the political initiative known as the “fourth transformation” or “4T”.

“With me, that will end,” Gálvez pointed out, accusing the AMLO government of bringing in Cuban physicians under false pretenses, “because they pay them a pittance and all the money goes to the Cuban regime.”

Criticism of López Obrador's policy of importing Cuban doctors has been a cornerstone of Gálvez's campaign, as she repeatedly emphasizes that Mexico is funding the Caribbean dictatorship.

“There are plenty of good doctors in Mexico; we need to expand specialty training slots,” Gálvez asserted, indicating that the solution lies in encouraging the training of more orthopedists, cardiologists, pediatricians, and surgeons.

“There is talent in Mexico; we do not need Cuban doctors,” she reiterated.

Additionally, the opposition candidate stressed the importance of focusing on national doctors, noting that many are unemployed. She emphasized the need to "give them the opportunity to enter specialties, hire them, and pay them well so they are willing to work in rural areas."

Recently, during the final debate leading up to the presidential elections, Gálvez promised to “bring order” to Mexico's southern border if she wins the election.

“It must be very clear that today the southern border is in the hands of criminals; today criminals control migration, and that is very serious,” she reported to Telemundo 51.

Key Concerns about Cuban Doctors in Mexico

As the Mexican presidential elections draw near, candidate Xóchitl Gálvez has raised several critical issues related to the hiring of Cuban doctors. Here are some frequently asked questions and their answers regarding this contentious topic.

Why is Xóchitl Gálvez against the hiring of Cuban doctors?

Gálvez argues that the hiring of Cuban doctors is a way to finance the Cuban regime, rather than a genuine effort to address healthcare needs in Mexico. She believes that the money paid to Cuban doctors largely goes to the Cuban government.

What alternative solutions does Gálvez propose for healthcare in Mexico?

Gálvez suggests expanding specialty training slots for Mexican doctors and incentivizing their work, particularly in rural areas, by offering better pay and opportunities for specialization.

What other criticisms has Gálvez made about the current administration?

Besides the Cuban doctor issue, Gálvez has criticized the López Obrador administration for its handling of Mexico's southern border, claiming that it is controlled by criminals who manage migration in the area.
