Ten people were injured, two critically, after a truck carrying 25 workers from the Empresa Provincial de Mantenimiento Vial y Construcción del Poder Popular (ViaMAC) crashed on Wednesday in the province of Sancti Spíritus.

The accident occurred on the morning of May 29th in the locality of Iguará, in the municipality of Yaguajay, when the truck driver lost control of the vehicle, according to reports by Radio Fomento on social media.

The workers, hailing from the municipalities of Sancti Spíritus and Taguasco, were headed to perform tasks related to green area maintenance, as specified by La Voz de Yaguajay.

Following the crash, the most critical cases were immediately transported to the Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial Hospital, while five individuals with minor injuries were treated at the Joaquín Paneca Consuegra Municipal Teaching Hospital in Yaguajay.

In an update on Thursday, local press indicated that five injured individuals were sent to Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial Hospital, with two suffering from multiple traumas and reported in serious condition. The other three were evaluated by specialists at the institution.

Two additional workers remained under observation at the Joaquín Paneca Consuegra Municipal Teaching Hospital, according to Doctor Pedro Israel González, the hospital director.

"The cause of the accident was determined to be loss of vehicle control, which constitutes a violation of article 102 of Law 109," stated Sub-Lieutenant Jesús Valdivia Sierra, Criminalist Expert of the PNR Unit in Yaguajay, who provided no further details about the incident.

In another recent truck accident in Cuba, 22 members of the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) were injured on Tuesday morning when a ZIL 130 truck they were traveling in crashed in the mountainous area of the municipality of Candelaria, in the province of Artemisa.

Last year, 729 people lost their lives in Cuba due to traffic accidents. Authorities recorded 8,556 road crashes, resulting in 5,938 injuries.
