Friday, May 31, 2024 by Aaron Delgado

The Cuban regime deployed military forces on Thursday night and early Friday morning in several districts of Santiago de Cuba to quell citizen protests against prolonged blackouts in the city.

Independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada reported through his channels that multiple regime repression units were dispatched after residents of Santiago began banging pots and demanding the restoration of electricity services.

A post from a regime spokesperson on Facebook acknowledged the disturbances. "There were indeed some disturbances, with a mix of conga and chorus, but nothing serious," wrote the profile associated with Minint known as "Aris Arias Batalla."

Amid Cuba's energy crisis, protests have been reported in various provinces. On Tuesday, after intense blackouts in Cienfuegos, dozens of residents took to the streets, banging pots and chanting "freedom" while protesting against the government and demanding the restoration of electrical service.

Videos shared on social media showed a crowd of Cienfuegos residents manifesting against the government and calling for the return of electricity.

The regime has recently admitted that it anticipates protests, especially during the summer months.
