The renowned Cuban gastroenterologist Pablo Orlando Nodarse Pérez passed away on Friday at the age of 89 in Havana.
The Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical-Surgical Hospital announced his death on their Facebook page, sharing photos of the honor guard held by colleagues for the distinguished specialist. "With immense sadness and pain, we bid a physical farewell today to one of the most beloved and respected professors of our field. As cited in the article from La Voz de Cabaiguán, 'the longest-serving Cuban gastroenterologist,'" the post recalled.
"Farewell, Professor Pablo Orlando Nodarse Pérez, for you will always live on in every graduate, every scientific success, every new task accomplished. Your legacy will never die," it concluded.
Born in Cabaiguán, Sancti Spíritus, on March 2, 1935, the physician was a second-degree specialist in gastroenterology. From 1975 to 1982, he served as the head of the provincial gastroenterology group and was a member of the national specialty group. In 1982, he was named the founding head of the Gastroenterology Service at Hermanos Ameijeiras.
The institution recalled that it was Dr. Nodarse Pérez, with his knowledge and perseverance, who significantly advanced the development of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy. "Together with the general surgery service, he initiated laparoscopic cholecystectomy and the development of minimally invasive endoscopic surgery, as well as the multidisciplinary development of biliopancreatic extracorporeal lithotripsy, a unique experience in the country," the hospital noted in another post.
For his extensive merits, in 2019 he was awarded the honorary title of Hero of Labor of the Republic of Cuba, the only one in his gastroenterology specialty in the country. The Camilo Cienfuegos General Hospital in his home province also awarded him the Order "In Service of Life".
