Monday, June 3, 2024 by Henry Cruz

In a historic milestone, Claudia Sheinbaum has been elected as the first female president of Mexico, following the elections held this Sunday. This victory confirms the continuity of the presidency within the Morena party, founded by the current president Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

"This is the triumph of the people of Mexico, of the peaceful revolution of consciousness, and the recognition by our people that the mandate to continue and advance with the Fourth Transformation of Public Life in Mexico is clear," Sheinbaum said on Instagram.

The electoral day concluded with opposition candidate, Xóchitl Gálvez, representing the Coalition of Force and Heart for Mexico, conceding defeat early Monday morning. From Mexico City, Gálvez stated that she accepted the results out of love for the country but emphasized the need to demand solutions to national issues.

"My recognition comes with a firm demand for results and solutions to the major problems of the country, and the indispensable respect for the constitution and democratic institutions. We will take to the streets as many times as necessary to defend the Republic and democracy," Gálvez expressed.

Preliminary data from the National Electoral Institute (INE) indicated that Sheinbaum secured between 58.3% and 60.7% of the votes, significantly surpassing Gálvez's 26.6% to 28.6% and Jorge Álvarez Máynez's 9.9% to 10.8%.

In her first message following the announcement of these results, Sheinbaum thanked her supporters and committed to working for the country's welfare.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) congratulated Sheinbaum on her victory.

"It is a glorious day because the people of Mexico have freely and democratically decided that Claudia Sheinbaum becomes the first female president in 200 years of our Republic's independence. Congratulations to all who have the fortune to live in these stellar times of pride and transformation," AMLO stated.
