Rapid Recovery of Young Cuban Woman After Stroke in Texas

Monday, June 3, 2024 by Olivia Torres

Daymi Furcade Cateura, a Cuban mother who has been hospitalized since early May in Austin, Texas after suffering a stroke, continues to show significant signs of improvement.

Her brother, Damian Furcade, has recently shared several videos on TikTok documenting Daymi's progress. These videos show her beginning to eat on her own, blowing kisses, understanding questions and nodding affirmatively, applying lipstick, and even attempting to style her hair.

In each of these moments, Damian's tenderness towards his sister is evident as he continually encourages her to gain more independence.

In early May, Damian Furcade Cateura posted a heartfelt video requesting prayers and support from the Cuban community for his sister, who faced this severe health issue just over a month after arriving in the United States via the CBP One application.

The family is striving to urgently bring Daymi's 16-year-old daughter, Elizabeth Vanesa, and her mother, Haydée Cateura, to Texas on humanitarian visas.

The medical center where Daymi is hospitalized has drafted a document addressed to the Cuban consular section, requesting that humanitarian visas be granted to Daymi Furcade's family, emphasizing her need for their presence.

Simultaneously, Damian Furcade has opened a GoFundMe account with a target of $30,000.

"The reason for this fundraising is to alleviate hospital expenses plus the recovery process, which doctors explain could take months or even a year. These funds will be used for the entire long process she faces in the hospital and her subsequent recovery," Damian explained.

Unfortunately, Daymi Furcade is not the only Cuban mother residing in the United States who has suffered a stroke. Arianna Hernández, another young Cuban mother diagnosed in a coma in Tampa after experiencing a seizure and multiple strokes, also showed miraculous improvement within weeks and was recently discharged.
