A woman with a long history of scams in the city of Santiago de Cuba was detained this Monday after a victim, along with neighbors, managed to detain her and call the police, according to journalist Yosmany Mayeta.
"This woman rented an apartment in the VICOA buildings of Micro 9 and emptied the entire place," a source told the reporter. "She used fake IDs to carry out her scams, and today, by chance, a relative of one of her victims recognized her. The neighbors quickly surrounded her and notified the authorities," the witness added.
The alleged scammer is named Yuleidis Cala—better known as "Yuya"—and resides on Calle Pizzaro, between 5th and 6th streets, in the Flores neighborhood. The arrest occurred on Carlos Dubois Street, very close to the Alameda in Santiago de Cuba.
In some images released, the woman is seen remaining silent when surrounded by several people. She neither defended herself nor denied the accusations. In another video, she is seen being taken out of a house and placed in a patrol car while dozens of neighbors looked on.
In the comments section of Mayeta Labrada's post, a significant number of internet users claimed to have been directly scammed by this woman or shared experiences of close ones who were deceived by her. "Finally, let's hope she pays for everything she's done. She's been scamming for a long time with several police reports against her. There's a lot to tell from that story," one user noted.
"I know her. She came to my house several times on a motorcycle she uses for scamming. She tried to sell me beef and other things. She asked me for money, but I never gave it to her. She also has a motorcyclist accomplice," another commenter indicated.
"Thank God they caught her. She scammed my mom and grandpa years ago. May the full weight of the law fall on her," a woman stated.
"She is shameless, and after some time, she walks past her victims' doors as if nothing happened," a third victim emphasized.
However, many expressed doubts that she would actually serve much time in prison or settle her debt to justice. "I imagine she must have some connection with someone in the police because this woman has been doing this for years, and nothing happens to her," another commenter said, fearing that this arrest might not have lasting consequences.
