A young Cuban woman who had been reported missing by her family is now safe at home after being rescued from a drifting boat near the coasts of Artemisa.
The feminist platform YoSíTeCreo en Cuba announced on social media that Melisa Odaisi Peraza Cabrera, 24, a resident of Cárdenas, Matanzas, is now home. "We are closing the #AlertaYeniset alert for the disappearance of Melisa Odaisi Peraza Cabrera (24 years old) from Cárdenas, Matanzas. She is now home," they posted.
Activist Marta María Ramírez also confirmed the closure of the alert, and suggested that the family seek specialized help to address the root causes of the disappearance.
Additionally, she urged independent media to verify information from multiple sources regarding these sensitive cases.
Peraza Cabrera, a mother of three children under the age of four, was last seen on May 14, the day she left her home for Havana to meet a man she had connected with through social media.
On May 27, after days of unsuccessful attempts to reach her and after a known acquaintance saw her from a distance on Ayestarán Street in Havana walking with two young men, the family reported her missing to the Cárdenas police. However, on Sunday, she contacted her family to ask for help, stating that she was part of a group of 19 rafters lost at sea.
YoSíTeCreo en Cuba intervened and demanded that authorities begin searching for the rafters, which included seven women and 12 men. It was known that they were adrift somewhere off the coast of Artemisa and/or Mayabeque. The platform did not provide details on how the rafters were found or their condition at the time of rescue.
