The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX) of Cuba has announced the upcoming arrival of several Russian Navy vessels, including a nuclear-powered submarine, for an "official visit" to Havana.
"Between June 12 and June 17, 2024, a naval detachment from the Russian Federation will make an official visit to the port of Havana, comprising four vessels: the frigate 'Gorshkov', the nuclear-powered submarine 'Kazan', the fleet's tanker 'Pashin', and the salvage tug 'Nikolai Chiker'," MINREX revealed in a statement this Thursday.
The official note highlights that the visit aligns with the "historic friendship relations between Cuba and the Russian Federation" and adheres strictly to international regulations to which Cuba is a state party.
MINREX clarified that none of the vessels carry nuclear weapons, assuring that their presence does not pose a threat to the region.
Upon the arrival of the Russian naval detachment, 21 salvos will be fired from one of the ships as a salute to the nation, which will be reciprocated by an artillery battery from the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) at the San Carlos de La Cabaña Fortress.
The Cuban Foreign Ministry indicated that during their stay, the Russian sailors will follow a program of activities, including courtesy visits to the head of the Revolutionary Navy and the Governor of Havana. They are also scheduled to tour places of historical and cultural interest.
"The visits of naval units from other countries have been a historical practice of the revolutionary government with nations with which we maintain friendly and collaborative relations," MINREX concluded.
