Oscar Ruiz Moreira, the former director of the National Sports News program, has permanently relocated to the United States. Moreira, who also headed the show Glorias Deportivas, left behind his wife and daughter in Cuba.
The news was shared on Facebook by sports journalist Yasel Porto, who did not specify the means by which his former colleague emigrated. "Oscarito had an excellent relationship with most of his coworkers due to his friendly and respectful nature. One could say he was the best on a personal level among all the TV directors at the channel, despite the always complex and questionable environment," Porto reminisced.
"With his emigration, Tele Rebelde loses one of the good ones both professionally and personally. In the latter, I don't recall anyone criticizing him for harming anyone," he added.
Ruiz Moreira dedicated 35 years to Cuban television, starting at age 18 as a production assistant. He initially worked on fiction programs such as the series La Gran Rebelión and Algo más que soñar, before transitioning to news broadcasts.
Besides the National Sports News, he directed several other news programs, including the Midday News, the ANSOC News on Canal Habana, the Ponte al día News, and the popular participation show Libre Acceso on Canal Habana.
Dozens of individuals, including several colleagues, wished him success in his new life in the United States and hoped he could soon reunite with his family. "I worked a lot with him in different segments and always observed his professionalism, seriousness, and drive to excel. An excellent person and friend... I wish him the best," wrote retired sports commentator René Navarro.
"I'm very happy for him. And yes, I agree, if he was great as a director, as a human being he's incomparable," commented journalist Julita Osendi.
"All the best to Oscarito. Stellar in everything—work and life!" underscored journalist Jesús Muñoz.
Many sports journalists are leaving Cuba in this ongoing wave of migration that seems to have no end in sight.
