Colombia aims to export up to 40 million eggs to Cuba during 2024, according to Gonzalo Moreno, president of the National Federation of Poultry Farmers of Colombia (Fenavi). Moreno stated that the country has already exported seven million eggs to the island since March 12, but this figure could reach 40 million by the end of 2024. He noted, "the island has become a natural market for Colombia," as cited by the Cuban state-run agency Prensa Latina.

Moreno highlighted the "geographical proximity and competitiveness in price and quality" as key factors. Speaking at the Corferias fairgrounds in Bogotá during the XXI Fenavi Congress, Moreno explained that they are also exploring export opportunities to other Caribbean countries, but "Cuba is now the main market." He mentioned plans to "export liquid eggs" for industrial processes such as baking, with a "first refrigerated test container to be sent soon."

Colombia produces 50 million eggs daily, with those destined for Cuba shipped from the port of Cartagena in the north of the country. In December of the previous year, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) announced in a statement that they would soon begin exporting fresh eggs to Cuba. This announcement followed successful negotiations with the island's National Animal Health Center (CNA), which finally approved the purchase.

"We are pleased to announce this important news for the poultry sector, which will bring substantial benefits to the national economy, job creation, and the transformation of the Colombian countryside," said Juan Fernando Roa, general manager of the ICA, at the time.

On March 12, Cuba received two containers with the first eggs from Colombia, marking an unprecedented shipment between the two countries. This agreement was established during the Havana International Fair (Fihav). The initial shipment comprised two 40-foot containers, equivalent to 518,400 eggs. In Cuba, eggs have become a scarce commodity for residents. A carton of 30 eggs costs 3500 pesos, more than a minimum wage salary.
