From Miami to Havana: Mystery Owner Imports First Tesla Cybertruck to Cuba

Sunday, June 9, 2024 by Elizabeth Alvarado

One of the most expensive and technologically advanced cars of the moment is about to arrive in Havana from Miami, but the identity of its owner remains unknown as they have chosen to stay anonymous. The vehicle in question is the famous Tesla Cybertruck, a fully electric pickup truck developed by billionaire Elon Musk's company, which will soon be seen driving through Cuba, according to a Miami-based export company.

A video circulating on social media showed two employees from a Miami export agency initiating preparations for the collection and transportation of the vehicle. According to them, the destination is a small-to-medium enterprise (Mipyme) in Cuba. However, they did not disclose the identity of the person or entity that will receive the luxurious car in Havana, which costs between $80,000 and $100,000 for the all-wheel-drive models, and slightly less for the standard models.

"The first Tesla Cybertruck for Cuba? I can only imagine that 'El Cangrejo,' the grandson of Raúl Castro, could afford such a luxury," said influencer Alain Paparazzi on X, who shared the promotional video from the export company.

"Despite the imperialist Yankee usurper and genocidal blockade, the comrade in the video has made a revolutionary effort to export a Tesla Cybertruck to Cuba from the U.S.," commented user Frank el Makina sarcastically on the same social network.

"In all honesty, Miami deserves more than any other Cuban province to host the July 26th celebrations... There goes the first Tesla Cybertruck from 'exile' to Havana. Who will be the lucky one to drive it through the streets of Havana? A doctor, a university professor, a distinguished worker? No way, that toy is for Sandro Castro, or 'El Cangrejo,' or another privileged member of the Dictatorial Elite! How much did it cost? A hundred thousand... a bit more? It doesn't matter; in the end, the Cuban people will pay for it with more blackouts, more hunger, and more misery," concluded the user known as La Tijera on X.

Export Licenses and Economic Impact

In April 2023, the U.S. Department of the Treasury granted licenses to Miami entrepreneurs for the shipment of cars, trucks, tractors, and even trailers to self-employed workers in Cuba. "For 10 million dollars, it includes used cars, new cars, trailers, tractors, and all agricultural equipment, also minibuses," said Eduardo Aparicio of Apacargo Express, one of the agencies that received the export license.

A year later, statistics from the U.S.-Cuba Economic and Trade Council (USCTEC) revealed that the United States exported nearly 10 million dollars in cars to Cuba in 2023. The imports included new and semi-new cars, trucks, and ambulances, among others.

Earlier in May, Cuban reggaeton artist El Taiger posed with a Tesla Cybertruck on the streets of Miami. After gifting an Audi to his daughter in Cuba, it seems the musician has set his sights on this impressive, futuristic vehicle.

"Here we are, look at this. Look at the vessel. This is the latest model from Tesla. I don't even know what it looks like. It looks like an armored car," said one Cuban in early April, amazed by seeing the Tesla Cybertruck up close. "There is overpopulation in cemeteries. These are the new coffins," said another Cuban upon seeing a Tesla Cybertruck driving down a Miami highway.
