Wednesday, June 12, 2024 by Matthew Diaz

The Cuban-American singer and actress Gloria Estefan was honored this Sunday with the "Legend" award at the Billboard Latin Women in Music 2024 ceremony, in recognition of her 47-year artistic career. "You're going to make me cry," the artist said as she received the award from her husband, fellow artist and entrepreneur Emilio Estefan, as reported by Telemundo. "And when I cry, I can't speak," added the singer, actress, and songwriter, who took to the stage amidst a shower of applause and ovations that celebrated Gloria's legacy among Latina women in the music industry.

In her acceptance speech, Gloria reminisced about the moment she met Emilio, who would later become her husband and confidant, but at that time was just a "young man playing the accordion." She also recounted when he invited her to join the Miami Sound Machine, noting that there were no female-fronted bands at the time: "How things have changed!" expressed one of the key pioneers who has paved the way for Latina women in the American music industry.

"Every time I see a woman succeed, it fills my heart with joy and happiness," Gloria said, thanking Emilio for always supporting her career. "I wouldn't be here if it weren't for him," she pointed out. Before presenting the award to Gloria, Emilio dedicated some heartfelt words to her: "I am so proud of you," a sentiment they celebrated with a kiss amidst the audience's excitement.

In June 2023, Gloria Estefan became the first Latina woman inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame (SHOF). "What an incredible night! SHOF, thank you to everyone who was there, especially my family who stood by my side and all the fans who have supported and listened to my words throughout the years," the singer said upon receiving the accolade.

According to Billboard, among Gloria's top achievements that justify this award are placing 29 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, with three reaching number one: "Anything For You" in 1988, "Don't Wanna Lose You" in 1989, and "Coming Out of the Dark" in 1991. Additionally, 30 songs made it to the Hot Latin Songs chart, with 15 of them reaching the top.

Her first Spanish-language album, titled Mi Tierra (1993), stayed at the top of the Top Latin Albums chart for 58 weeks, earning her the first of three Grammy Awards for that record.
