Cuban Woman Rescued After Month-Long Captivity in Tenerife

Wednesday, June 12, 2024 by James Rodriguez

The Spanish police rescued a Cuban woman this Tuesday who had been held captive for at least a month in a house in the town of Tejina, located in San Cristóbal de la Laguna, Tenerife. The woman was reportedly subjected to abuse by her captor.

José Javier López, an inspector with the Local Police of La Laguna, explained that at around 11:30 a.m. on June 11th, a neighbor alerted the police after receiving notes from a woman pleading for help. Officers promptly responded to the indicated residence, where they encountered a man who claimed nothing was amiss. However, a woman inside the house revealed that she had been held captive since arriving from Cuba a month ago.

The woman detailed to the authorities that the man had confiscated her passport and repeatedly subjected her to abuse. The man was arrested and has since been placed in judicial custody, while the Cuban woman received medical attention at the Tejina Health Center.

The Local Police praised the community's cooperation in combating abuse and encouraged citizens to report any suspicions of gender violence. No further details about the case or the identities of the individuals involved have been disclosed at this time, nor has the Cuban woman's immigration status been confirmed.

In a related incident in March, the Spanish police dismantled a sexual exploitation ring in Granada that coerced immigrants from Cuba and Colombia into prostitution. Four individuals—two women and two men aged between 24 and 45—were arrested. According to the EFE agency, the victims, three women and one man, were continuously monitored with cameras and forced to offer drugs to clients, supplied by a Colombian who operated a cocaine laboratory that was also shut down during the operation.

The perpetrators exploited the victims' vulnerable situations, as they were residing illegally in Spain, forcing them into prostitution.
