The United States government has announced new sanctions against transport companies that facilitate the entry of irregular immigrants into the country. "The United States is taking steps to impose visa restrictions on an executive of a charter flight company for facilitating illegal migration to the United States via Nicaragua from outside the Western Hemisphere," said the State Department in an official statement.

Additionally, the statement highlights the Nicaraguan regime as a primary beneficiary of these transportations. "At the same time, the Ortega-Murillo regime in Nicaragua continues to benefit economically from the exploitation of vulnerable migrants," the statement reads.

The sanctions, according to the release, are meant to "promote accountability for these actors," adding that "no one should profit from vulnerable migrants, not traffickers, private companies, or public officials." The Biden administration has indicated that it will continue "taking steps to impose visa restrictions on the owners, executives, and senior officials of unscrupulous transport companies as part of our broader campaign to eliminate these exploitative practices within and outside the Western Hemisphere, in collaboration with partners in government and the private sector."

Subsecretary's Statement and Further Measures

Brian A. Nichols, the Subsecretary of State for Hemispheric Affairs, expressed on X (formerly Twitter) that "The United States continues to promote accountability against those who profit from the exploitation of vulnerable migrants. We have taken steps to restrict the visa of an executive from a charter flight company for facilitating migration via Nicaragua."

Since November 2023, the United States has imposed visa restrictions under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) "against the owners, executives, and senior officials of companies offering charter flights to Nicaragua designed primarily for irregular migrants to the United States," according to a State Department communiqué.

Following this announcement, many airlines that transported Cubans to Nicaragua ceased offering flights connecting the two countries.
