An elderly Cuban man, well-known in the San Pedrito neighborhood of Santiago de Cuba, was discovered dead inside his home. Residents of the area reported to journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada that the man, named Pedro Ángel Ramiro Cabrera, was around 78 or 79 years old and lived alone.
He was a beloved figure in the neighborhood, known for selling root vegetables and for his poetic talents. People affectionately called him Ramirito or 1500 Ramirito, a nod to one of his many poems that he often recited on the streets.
His home was located on Calle Antúnez, between Alba and Caonao, directly across from the Foco Cultural of the popular Conga San Pedrito. Neighbors decided to enter his house after noticing a foul odor emanating from within.
They found him in the bathroom, severely bloated. The cause of death remains unknown at this time. "We don’t know how many days he’s been dead, but those who went inside came out covering their noses," a neighbor told the journalist.
Photos shared on Facebook depict members of the Ministry of the Interior outside the residence and a fire truck on the scene. Numerous individuals expressed their sorrow over the tragic event.
"Ramirito, what sadness. RIP. He used to recite poems, I hadn't seen him in a long time," said a young woman.
"I knew him, what a loss. He was a very jovial and fun man, always selling..." another young woman recalled.
"Oh, Ramirito, how you passed away. He was dearly loved by the people of San Pedrito; he was always there, reciting his beautiful poems at every event," lamented a man.
"1500 Ramirito, give me a break, little inspector. That's how he greeted me every time I saw him. He was very cherished by his neighborhood. Rest in peace, my friend," expressed a father.
