Dozens of Cubans are enduring waits of up to five days on the waiting list at Havana’s bus terminal amid the country's ongoing transportation and fuel crisis. Journalist Yosmany Mayeta posted images showing people of all ages, including small children, sleeping on the floor of the Terminal Villa Nueva in Havana.
"We've been here for five days trying to travel to Oriente, and nothing. This is going to take a long time," stated one traveler. He described how mothers with young children sleep on the floor, there are long lines for the bathrooms, and the buses that arrive "only call one or two names from the waiting list."
The reporter emphasized that the crisis is not limited to the capital. At the terminal in Santiago de Cuba, people attempting to travel are sleeping outdoors, exposed to the rain and sun with no shelter.
"People on the waiting list are there because they need to travel. Many have medical appointments, and others are returning home after visiting family or attending medical consultations. It’s time to act and work for the people, not turn our backs on them," the publication highlighted.
In May, Cubans were waiting up to six days to travel. The worst, however, is yet to come. The situation at Cuba’s terminals is expected to worsen during the summer months when thousands of people move across the island, facing a nightmare that can only be resolved through bribes or protests at the waiting terminals.
