Young Father Dies Allegedly Due to Medical Negligence in Santiago de Cuba

Saturday, June 15, 2024 by Olivia Torres

A young father of a four-year-old child has died in Santiago de Cuba, allegedly due to medical negligence at the Ambrosio Grillo Hospital.

"He developed something in his nose that turned into cellulitis. It seems it spread and he caught a bacteria. They took him to the doctor because he was in a lot of pain, and you know how the medical care is in Cuba; they didn't give him the right medication. They were controlling it with pills, and it wasn't what he needed," a family member recounted in an audio message to journalist Yosmany Mayeta.

"They said there were no medications, but later when his condition worsened, they said the medication was indeed available. The truth is, he died because of the doctors' negligence, because they were giving him the wrong medication," the source added.

The victim, identified as Yasser Sánchez, was 34 years old and lived in the Los Pinos neighborhood, where his neighbors have expressed their shock over his death.

Yosmany Mayeta called on the authorities in Santiago to investigate what is happening at Ambrosio Grillo Hospital, as this is not the first reported case of alleged medical negligence in recent weeks.

"The Ambrosio Grillo Hospital in Santiago de Cuba has reported the deaths of young people over several weeks, and families have alleged that it is due to 'medical negligence'," pointed out the journalist.

"It is unacceptable to hide medications, medical supplies, and any medical assistance tools, allowing young people in Santiago to die from treatable conditions," he added.

The journalist urged the authorities to urgently intervene in the hospital and put an end to "the massacre they are committing." Mayeta Labrada further stated that this should be a unanimous call echoed by all those who have lost loved ones due to alleged medical negligence at that hospital.
