Cuban Activist Niurka Préstamo Loses Everything in Florida Floods

Saturday, June 15, 2024 by Madison Pena

The Cuban activist Niurka Préstamo has reached out for help on social media after losing everything during the recent floods that devastated several cities in Florida. Through her TikTok account, Préstamo shared the damage to her home.

"Look at my little house," she wrote in a video showing the water level that left her with nothing. She expressed that what hurt the most was losing a suitcase full of family photos. "I can recover material things, but not the memories," she wrote.

This situation has led Niurka to start a GoFundMe campaign, seeking financial support to rebuild her life from scratch. "This time it's me; we never know where life will place us, which is why I never tire of doing good," she said to draw attention to her plea.

The heavy rains in Florida have caused severe flooding, tornadoes, highway closures, school suspensions, and the cancellation of nearly 300 flights. "Insurance companies are going to go bankrupt after this storm... Here's a look at some of the wildest moments from today's floods!" summarized the popular Instagram account Only in Dade last Wednesday.

As of last Friday, several neighborhoods in northern Miami-Dade County remained under more than a foot of water days after the severe storms.
