Blocked from Leaving Cuba for Nicaragua: Activist Bárbaro de Céspedes Speaks Out: "They Won't Let Me Live"

Monday, June 17, 2024 by Alex Smith

Cuban dissident Bárbaro de Céspedes has reported that the State Security prevented him from leaving for Nicaragua, citing complicity between the governments of both countries. "State Security has tried to make my life impossible in Cuba, for my family and me. I made the hardest decision of my life, to emigrate from this country that I love and defend. It's not out of fear of death; I no longer have a life, but to avoid causing distress to my family," said the activist.

He had arranged to fly to Nicaragua on the afternoon of June 14, but after paying for his ticket—a costly flight with several stops—he was not allowed to board the plane. "While on the bus to the airport, I received a message saying that the Nicaraguan government denied my entry into the country," said De Céspedes.

The Cuban dissident is well-known for his activism and harsh criticism of the regime. In a live broadcast on Facebook, he explained that in 2021, his daughter had planned to emigrate to the United States via Nicaragua. However, when she tried to board the plane, Nicaraguan authorities denied her access.

Now, in 2024, the same situation has happened to him. De Céspedes commented that he decided to emigrate because after being released from prison in February 2024, State Security warned him that any incident occurring in Camagüey would result in his re-arrest and criminal prosecution.

Additionally, he frequently receives threats, warnings, and persecution, and faces a dire economic situation because the state does not allow him to work, either in the public or private sector. "Everyone who knows me understands that the homeland is above everything in my sentiments," remarked the Patriot of Camagüey with sorrow.

Bárbaro de Céspedes was arrested for protesting on July 11, 2021, and was sentenced to two years in prison on charges of assault, disobedience, and contempt. While in jail, he sent a message declaring his innocence and steadfastness in his principles. His struggle has been supported by his family and other activists. He was released in February 2024, but State Security continues to prevent him from leaving Cuba.
