More than 27,000 Cubans in an “irregular migration status” were detected between January and May 2024 by Mexican authorities, placing the Caribbean nation in the tenth position among countries with the most individuals identified in this condition during that period.

The National Institute of Migration (INM) reported on the social network X that a total of 27,404 Cubans in irregular status were detected in Mexico during the first five months of the year, out of a total that rises to nearly 1.4 million people. Venezuela, with 377,401 migrants, is the country with the highest number of migrants.

The INM statement indicates that individuals in “irregular migration status” come from 77 countries across five continents, including both families and individuals traveling alone, as well as nearly 3,000 unaccompanied minors.

The unaccompanied migrant minors were from Venezuela, Guatemala, Honduras, Ecuador, El Salvador, Colombia, Haiti, and Nicaragua, with none from Cuba. After Venezuela, the countries with the most irregular migrants reported are Guatemala (209,540), Honduras (144,499), Ecuador (136,699), Haiti (107,432), Colombia (70,371), El Salvador (52,636), Nicaragua (45,364), Peru (10,464), and Cuba (27,404).

Following are individuals from Senegal (20,847), Guinea (19,922), the Dominican Republic (16,228), China (13,780), and Brazil (11,058).

According to the EFE agency, the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, recently denied that there is an overflow of the migration flow in the country, despite the tightening of anti-immigrant measures by the United States government and the executive order by President Joe Biden, which restricts asylum applications and speeds up deportations.

However, irregular migration intercepted by Mexico has tripled in the first quarter of the year to nearly 360,000 people amid increasing operations, EFE indicated.

Last May, the governments of Cuba and Mexico met in Havana to address the irregular migration crisis toward the United States, an issue that has kept Latin America on edge.

Calls to avoid dangerous routes, along with measures taken by the U.S. administration regarding its southern border, were among the topics discussed.
