Cuban Migrant Reports Abuse by Refugee Commission in Mexico

Monday, June 17, 2024 by Grace Ramos

A Cuban migrant currently in Mexico has reported abuse by police and the country's Commission for Refugees (COMAR), particularly regarding the denial of access to water. The Cuban, identified as Carlos Alberto in statements to the local outlet Noticias Frontera Sur, called for a bit of respect and consideration from the authorities of this organization, acknowledging their vulnerable situation.

"I would call on Human Rights organizations to bring some order, attention, and basic respect to us. We are not asking for anything grand, not to be placed in a palace, a hotel, or anything like that," said Carlos Alberto.

According to him, the primary difficulty lies in accessing water tanks provided by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). "I say one thing, UNICEF put those there for migrants, so they can have drinking water and certain conditions. We have gone to ask for filtered water to drink, and it has been denied to us most of the time," he mentioned.

Recently, it was reported that bus lines in Monclova, a city in the border state of Coahuila, are refusing to sell tickets to foreigners, even those with legal documents. This has left many migrants, primarily Cubans and Venezuelans, stranded in their journey toward the United States.

This situation has caused migrants with these nationalities to be stuck in Monclova, as it is impossible for them to walk the 300 kilometers to the border.
