This Monday marked the commencement of the new international route by Cubana de Aviación, originating from the José Martí International Airport in Havana and destined for Tocumen Airport in Panama.
"With the takeoff of the IL96 aircraft from José Martí International Airport heading to Tocumen Airport, the charter operations officially kick off, connecting Havana and Panama twice weekly, on Mondays and Fridays," announced the Cuban airline on its Facebook page.
According to the same entity, "the revival of the Havana-Panama-Havana route will reestablish Cubana de Aviación in this significant Latin American destination."
The Cuban Ambassador to Panama, Víctor Cairo, described the moment as a "long-awaited return." On the other hand, the General Manager of Tocumen International Airport, Raffoul Arab, expressed his excitement to Aviation Club Center about the resumption of these flights.
"This restart of operations between Cuba and Panama signifies an important step in strengthening the historical and cultural ties that unite our peoples," he affirmed.
Data from the Security Directorate of the Colón Free Zone reveals that Cubans lead the visits to the Panama Free Zone, contributing to the airline's interest in conducting these flights.
In 2023, Cubans topped the list of visitors to the Panama Free Zone with 15,042 visitors, followed closely by Ecuador, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Peru.
Until now, Cubana de Aviación officially only flew to Caracas while maintaining two domestic routes to Holguín and Santiago de Cuba.
The fare for flights to Panama City is estimated at around 331 USD. For this price, travelers are entitled to "two checked bags (plus taxes)" and the option to purchase extra luggage on passenger flights, as well as cargo operations by the airline.
