Apartment Building in Miami Demolished After Devastating Fire

Tuesday, June 18, 2024 by Hannah Aguilar

Following the devastating fire that displaced over 40 residents of the Temple Court apartment complex in Miami last week, including several Cubans, specialized crews demolished the building on Tuesday. Located at 431 NW 3 Street, the structure was partially destroyed, prompting county authorities to declare it an imminent collapse risk. The former residents were unable to retrieve their personal belongings.

Several of the displaced individuals are currently staying at a Motel 6, which has become their temporary home while they await permanent housing, according to Local 10 News. Among those affected was Cuban singer María Antonieta Fernández, who stated she lost everything in the blaze. "I am really very nervous, super worried," she said in an interview with journalist Ninoska Pérez for the radio station La Nueva Poderosa while the building was still burning.

"I lost practically all my belongings there," said Joel Enrique, another resident. "I just need a minute... not these minutes," he repeated in statements to CBS News.

Shooting Incident Linked to Fire

The incident also involved a shooting, with a person found shot at the building's entrance. It was later revealed that the victim was Feder-One Biotte, a 30-year-old maintenance worker at the apartment complex.

Police eventually arrested Juan Francisco Figueroa, 73, who was taken to the TGK Jail in Miami-Dade as a suspect in the shooting and subsequent arson. Figueroa, facing charges of attempted murder with a firearm, felony arson, and causing a fire, admitted to his actions, stating he "expected to be in prison for the rest of his life," according to the arrest report.
