Wednesday, June 19, 2024 by Oscar Fernandez

A partial building collapse on Tuesday night in a structure located on Monte Street between Águila and Ángeles in Old Havana has left at least one person injured. The injured individual was transported to a hospital in the Cuban capital.

The incident occurred at midnight at the building located at 427 Monte Street, according to a post on social media by the Havana Vieja Municipal Administration Council.

"At 12:00 AM, the corridor in the building at Monte No. 427 between Águila and Ángeles collapsed. There were no injuries or fatalities," stated municipal authorities.

However, images captured by local residents contradicted the official account, showing at least one person injured, as evidenced by photos and videos shared by Cuban internet users.

"Breaking news: Collapse on Monte between Águila and Ángeles, Old Havana. According to reports, the rescue team is trying to extract people," reported a Facebook user identified as Edmundo Dantés Junior.

Photographs shared by this user showed at least two trucks and a fire engine on the scene. Several police cars and motorcycles also responded to the area, where a crowd of neighbors had gathered.

It was the neighbors who asked the officers of a police patrol to transport the young woman to the hospital. Carried on the shoulder of one of them, the young woman appeared to be unconscious.

As of the time of writing, the identity and condition of the young woman remain unknown. Unverified information suggests that the woman is the mother of two children. Neither authorities nor official media have reported any victims from the collapse, the cause of which remains unknown.

"Firefighters and forces from the Ministry of the Interior (MININT) are working at the scene," indicated the Havana Vieja Municipal Administration Council, highlighting the presence of authorities on-site.

According to a Facebook user identified as Saúl Manuel, it appears that "multiple people, including children, were present when the collapse occurred."

"A young mother of two had to be transported to the hospital (unconscious) in a cramped patrol car because there were no ambulances," he added.

This is a developing story.
