Layra de la Caridad Valdés Ramírez, a young woman born in Havana, Cuba, has graduated from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM)

"My mother went from being a laboratory director at a hospital to cleaning bathrooms as a housekeeper. My father, who holds a Master's degree in Chemistry, now works in a warehouse. It was tough for them to learn a new language, and they still struggle every day to communicate," Layra expressed.

Journey to Success

At 24 years old, Layra has demonstrated exceptional dedication to dentistry. She is particularly passionate about serving underserved communities, where she uses her native Spanish to better communicate with patients.

Her interest in dentistry began during her childhood in Havana, when her orthodontist transformed a frightening experience into something enjoyable. This sparked her admiration for dental professionals and her desire to heal others.

During her time at HSDM, Layra excelled not only academically but also in her commitment to advancing science and promoting oral health. She led the Hispanic Student Dental Association's efforts to translate dental and medical infographics, making the information more accessible to Spanish-speaking patients.

She also organized dental courses for healthcare providers to facilitate communication with Spanish-speaking patients.

Although she graduated in May, Valdés faces challenging opportunities ahead. She plans to join the U.S. Air Force to continue her service as a healthcare professional and pursue a residency in orthodontics.
