Mexicana de Aviación is set to expand its flight routes to 11 international destinations, including Havana and Miami. With the acquisition of 20 new Brazilian Embraer aircraft, the airline will broaden its operations into international markets in countries such as Canada, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Colombia, and Peru, in addition to Cuba and the United States.
The company will join Aeroméxico, Viva Aerobus, and Magnicharters, the three airlines currently flying to Cuba from Mexico, according to data from ECASA. Mexicana currently operates from the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), located in the municipality of Zumpango, 44 km north of Mexico City.
According to Excelsior newspaper, on June 3, the airline announced the purchase of 20 Embraer 190 and 195 aircraft, with capacities of 108 and 132 passengers, respectively. The first five planes will be delivered to the state-owned company in 2025, followed by seven more in 2026, and the remaining 12 in 2027.
The company began operations last December and currently flies to 18 domestic destinations. Founded in 1921, Mexicana de Aviación was Mexico's oldest airline. Its last flight was in 2010 when operations were halted to proceed with a judicial process. In 2014, a judge declared the airline bankrupt.
In 2023, the Mexican government purchased Mexicana de Aviación, placing it under the responsibility of the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA) in a new entity called Aerolínea del Estado Mexicano.
